You know those pictures of vases which are actually faces? It’s the use of negative space which allows  us to see two things at once. We can make use of the same principle in writing. What we don’t see, or don’t say, can be immensely revealing. So this week, try to focus on negative space – what isn’t said, what we don’t see, what characters don’t notice.
